What are meta tags?

Meta tags are HTML tags used to describe various elements of the document to user agents that are displaying/reading them. Meta tags, unlike most other HTML tags, do not mark-up the content for presentation to the user, they are effectively hidden from the average web user and only visible by viewing the document source.

Meta tags can be used for many purposes including:

  • Providing a description/overview of the document
  • Providing a list of the core keywords found in the page
  • Letting robots know what they are allowed to do with the page content*
  • Providing HTTP header data, language, character set, etc
  • Preventing the agent from caching the document

* this only applies to robots that adhere to the exclusion protocol.
